Story #998
R. Linda:
Poor Mam. There she was all jolly that she had got anniversary presents for Sheila, the Dolan person, Tonya, and meself. She never forgets our anniversary and usually goes all out, so this year was no exception. She was hopping around all animated, and I knew what the deal was. She was busy wrapping presents, and the glow of happiness permeated her entire being. That is UNTIL I said to Tonya, "Your 40th birthday is coming up; we should do something special."
She thought about it, but with the pandemic, she opted to have a "just us" family party on the day. Ok then. Mam took me aside and told me she would get the cake. She knew precisely what Tonya wanted; if I would pick it up, that would be great. This cake has a price tag of $45 and is delicious. Mam also got Tonya Birkenstocks, a 50-gallon rain barrel for Ton's garden, and, as she usually does, a piece of jewellery with sunflowers somewhere on it and a few small things. So she went all out because she felt bad we couldn't invite Tonya's friends and such.
In between all this, it was our wee one's birthday, so we decided to have it quietly here. Only Ben invited himself because he had a present for the "little wheezer. " He even brought a cake, like we wouldn't have one.
A few days later, Tonya's sister texted about the 40th. She and her hubby had rented a house on Lake Winnie and would be here on the day, and they two were celebrating an anniversary why not make it a party. I was good with that, and Mam said she'd get them a little something to celebrate their day, and we fully thought we'd do all this at the lake. No, they would come to us. Yup. And then sissy remembers it is also the wee one's 7th birthday, so let's celebrate that too. OK! So, since we weren't doing it on Tonya's birthday but on a Sunday, Mam opted to bake a cake since she already bought the bakery one for Tonya's actual day.
But it doesn't end there. Tonya's brother Bruno and his wife and two little ones were on their way to Bar Harbor, and they thought they'd stop here. Well, guess what? It is their anniversary, too! Me Mam had already ordered something for Tonya's sissy, so now she felt she had to order something for Bruno and wife. SIGH.
A day later, Bruno shoots a text and says, "It's Janelle's birthday coming up. Why not celebrate that, too?" Well, why not? AND could me Mam make that chocolate cake he (Bruno) loves so much? Why, for sure, she can, and the cake will go from a 10" round to a sheet cake, one long layer!
When told of all this, me Mam threw up her hands and walked out.
This morning, she told me she didn't sleep for the sound of ka-Ching, ka-Ching, and the images of her baking a cake that was getting bigger and bigger! Poor thing.

So the woman be broke until . . . uh, October! And I told her she had too much family and other family, and that's her trouble. Not everyone expected her to do all she could or buy all those gifts, especially for anniversaries. Let that be between the couple. But the deed be done.
Mam has got all the ingredients for a cake from scratch. I bought the burgers, hot dogs, rolls and buns because I am no fool with a party that is turning into a horde of partygoers. I informed the self-invited to bring sides. It was only fair since this was THEIR idea. Oh yes, I have masks, gloves if needed, and lawn chairs (hoping the weather is good), all socially distanced apart from each other. Tonya even commented we'd be shouting at each other as the chairs were so far apart. I don't care. Shout away; it's not like we have neighbours who can hear us and complain.
It seemed that every time I told Mam about the party getting bigger, she'd shrug and say, "It be only money." Well, I think she regrets saying that. I bet it will all turn out well—at least, I hope so.
