Salem, Massachusetts at Halloween

Every year the entire family would travel to Salem, Massachusetts for the annual Halloween festivities (which be all of October by the by). But Halloween be the BIG day and the costumes are incredible. As in years past, I posted a lot of them on the blog if you care to go back in time and take another peek.

Everything is open in Salem on Halloween. A few of our favourite stops were the Depot Shop, The Witch Museum, Crow Haven, The House of Seven Gables, The Pirate Museum, and then there are the myriad of small shops on the wharf, one of which features an assortment of old fashion candy that has been in Salem from the very earliest of time. Places we like to eat are the Pigs Eye, Victoria Station and Murphy's. The Hawthorne Hotel we have on occasion eaten at, but the fare at the Pigs Eye and Victoria Station was more to the kiddo's tastes.

Being a seaport town where the likes of Nathaniel Hawthorne used to live (at the House of Seven Gables), and the Peabody Sisters of Salem (can't forget them), there are plenty of sea captain's homes to see. Down on the wharf, you can go through a few of them and there is an old ship one can also view on the dock.

The fact this was a seafaring town in the day brings out quite a few pirates.

And if a doorway won't do for your tired self, there be the haunted bench.

Down by the Depot, there is usually a crowd stopped there waiting for the trolley. Here are a few regular members of the town.

Not in costume I dare say

The part of town by the Museum has beautiful old neighbourhoods filled with the old sea captains' homes. One can take a tour of Salem and ride through this section of town. The history of the homes is worth the time.

The most interesting of all would be the old early wood home where the witch trials were held. You can go inside and learn all about the Salem Witch Trials. There are dungeons on the other side of town, as well if you want to go there.

One will find much entertainment wherever in Salem you go. The mall has a Halloween parade, a lot of interesting shops, re-enactments of the witch craze, and usually street entertainers. Some put on a show, others are like statues (you see a lot of that in England). Also a lot of kiosks full of souvenirs. 

Down by the wharf, there are many restaurants, artisan and speciality shops of the witchery kind. 

On Main Street are what one would expect to find in a city. Post office, coffee shops, subs shops, decor shops, that sort of thing. I recommend staying on the wharf and the mall. Much to see and do and it be an experience like no other -- Salem on Halloween.
