Salem, Massachusetts At Halloween

18 October 2021

Story #1043

R. Linda:

Every year, the entire family travels to Salem, Massachusetts, for the annual Halloween festivities (all of October). But Halloween is the BIG day, and the costumes are incredible. As in years past, I posted many of them on the blog, if you care to go back in time and take another peek.

Everything is open in Salem on Halloween. A few of our favourite stops were the Depot Shop, the Witch Museum, Crow Haven, the House of Seven Gables, and the Pirate Museum. Then there are the myriad small shops on the wharf, one of which features an assortment of old-fashioned candy from the very earliest of time in Salem. We like to eat at the Pig's Eye, Victoria Station and Murphy's. We have occasionally eaten at the Hawthorne Hotel, but the fare at the Pig's Eye and Victoria Station was more to the kiddo's tastes.

Being a seaport town where Nathaniel Hawthorne used to live (at the House of Seven Gables), and the Peabody Sisters of Salem (can't forget them), there are plenty of sea captains' homes to see. Down on the wharf, you can go through a few of them, and there is an old ship that one can also view on the dock.

The Friendship of Salem

The fact that this was a seafaring town in the day brings out quite a few pirates.

Here is a couple enjoying the parade of people moving by

And here be a jolly fellow relaxing, fresh off the ship, I would surmise

And if a doorway won't do for your tired self, there be the haunted bench.

Rather unique. Wouldn't you say?

Down by the Depot, a crowd is waiting for the trolley. Here are a few regular members of the town.

Not in costume, I dare say

The part of town by the Museum has beautiful old neighbourhoods filled with the old sea captains' homes. One can tour Salem and ride through this section of town. The history of the homes is worth the time.

Salem homes are unique, and each has its own story

One more, just gorgeous

The most interesting would be the old, early wood home where the witch trials were held. You can go inside and learn all about the Salem Witch Trials. There are dungeons on the other side of town, as well, if you want to go there.

There are a few of these piquant-style homes, all with history, dark history

One will find a lot of entertainment wherever you go in Salem. The mall has a Halloween parade, a lot of interesting shops, re-enactments of the witch craze, and usually street entertainers. Some put on a show, others like statues (you see much of that in England). Also, a lot of kiosks are full of souvenirs.

Down by the wharf are many restaurants, artisan and speciality shops of the witchery kind.

On Main Street are what one would expect to find in a city: the post office, coffee shops, sub shops, decor shops, and that sort of thing. I recommend staying on the wharf and the mall. There is much to see and do, and it will be an experience like no other—Salem on Halloween.
