The Overly Excited Media -- CRY WOLF!

R. Linda:

Yeah, yeah here we go again and you know who I'm going to tell on.

I have a bone to pick with the almighty media. Yes, I do. Yesterday morning there was Matt Gutman in Nags Head, North Carolina reporting about how the wind had picked up. Not only I, but everyone watching noticed Mr. Gutman's clothing wasn't whipping around or moving. It was like HUH? What wind? He also made cryptic mention of a large number of "body bags" arriving in the area. TRULY! If you want to put a population on edge, THAT'S the way to do it. Then later on ABC News, there stood a bundled-up Jim Sciutto reporting from Ocean City, Maryland holding onto a railing and reporting how the wind and rain had picked up and he was having trouble standing, YET below him on the beach were two casually dressed people, slowly strolling with no trouble at all along the beach! They had no problem standing and certainly weren't in any hurry as they enjoyed a leisurely stroll in the surf, so we were like WTF? Later around 4 p.m. the weather model had changed (this I found out from a follower in Maine), but it wasn't presented until the 6 o'clock news! At 6:30 p.m. there was Diane Sawyer walking about New York City looking like she'd been through a storm, yet there was no storm arrived yet. Her hair was pinned up and hairs were sticking out like she couldn't control them. She was dressed all in black to add to the mood and the makeup, well she needed some. Plus she's gained more weight than last time, so now not only does her arse stick out so does her 65-year-old stomach. I was like do we need to watch THIS? Sorry Diane, but for a prime-time news anchor your toady David Muir dresses so much better than you do, and he's fitter and probably will have your job soon. The point is, Diane was dressed for scrubbing the floor and didn't look the pricey news anchor she's paid to be and the question begs WHY? RATINGS, yup let's make more of this than there is and scare everyone on the eastern seaboard, it was like Diane had no time for hair, makeup and outfit SHE needed to be out THERE with the little people to warn them. COME ON! Me own Mam after a day of spring cleaning looks fresher than Ms. Sawyer. Anyway, she was reporting on how deserted New York City was. I thought, is it me or do I see other people walking around behind her? No one looked concerned or panicked, just Diane. Okay, it wasn't as crowded as it usually is, but really? Can we focus on preparations and the path of the storm maybe? Can we not have reporters competing with each other to make it all seem gloom and doom just to make their network money and get bigger viewership and ratings? Can we maybe concentrate on being an honest media with true assessments instead of sensationalism to scare the hell out of the population? All this crying wolf will make the REAL thing not believable when it happens. Everyone I've heard from so far was relieved that what the media predicted did not come to pass. Others were just plain stumped as to why they were told to expect a horrific catastrophe to find Irene like many other East Coast hurricanes (except for Florida), not a big deal where hundreds would die. I said me piece.

So here are a couple of pictures of what the outer bands of Irene have done. You are looking up me old road that no longer exists as such, and Lois's field in the background. Nothing out of the usual for a storm in New England.

Dead tree down, water flowing toward the house

Another tree down water moving down the old gravel road

I agree mate, us too on the nor'easters! Not much of anything here. The body bag comment did not go unnoticed here either. That is a new low in national news reporting. Gutman should be ashamed to have put it out there. Make him walk the plank Captain Gabe!
