Preparations for Hurricane Irene

27 August 2011

R. Linda:

As you probably have heard by now, we are expecting Cat. 1 Hurricane Irene either late tonight or early tomorrow morning. Either way, we be ready. Not because I wanted to be, but I was forced into it. It started with Dragon glued to the telly set watching the national news, I believe that was on Wednesday. A little aside here: Now we do know by now that the national news be big business and the more sensational the headlines the more money and viewership they earn. So being in the business I be as Captain Jack would say, "savvy" to all this manipulation. So when I hear millions will lose their homes, and the sea will wash in as far as Ohio, I take it with a grain of salt.

This be not to say I be foolish on this stuff, I do take it seriously but in stride, I do. Now this weather event did a couple of strange things to me. One was Dragon heard from the hubby that he was closing their home on the Cape May beach up, and getting the hell out of Dodge. So stay put. OH GOODY FOR ME! The second was that Weasil decided not to fly out on Saturday (today) as he was scheduled to for the UK. AND since Weasil was still here (and you should know the reason for Weasil staying wasn't so much for anything but that he was stoked to be in a hurricane, yes I know, can we say NUTTER!) so that meant our second house guest who went for his interview Wednesday and was still with us at the Dragon's invitation, was staying on too! FOR FREAKING JOY! Not. Can you see us ALL in me little abode during a hurricane? I be having a hard time with that.

Rabby and Dragon (mostly Dragon) thought it would be best if the young whippersnapper, Weasil, stayed with us. OH YEAH. I, meanwhile, was thinking seriously of taking a hotel room in . . . uh . . . Hawaii! Far, far away and removed not so much from the storm but the PEOPLE in me house!

Anyway, as the days passed and news of the storm continued to worsen, the more nervous the women in me house, including Rabby, became. I woke this morning to a list. A list made by the Dragon of what Gabe needed to do to prepare the property for the coming hurricane. Oh yeah, fun. I was to get ALL the wicker lawn furniture and store it in the garage. I was to secure the trash cans and put them inside the garage. I was to take down me beloved hammock and store that in said garage, I was to take down any bird feeders and the same storage idea. I was to chop down the dahlias because they'd get ruined and give the blooms over to Dragon who would brighten up the abode by flower arranging while I put me back into doing her list. UGH!

Meanwhile, Tonya was out getting supplies, food, water, batteries, petrol.

BUT WAIT, the good news be I wasn't alone in me outdoor labours. Dragon enlisted both Rabby and the Weasil to help me. I pretty much was on me own, just to get done so I wasn't looking at what THEY were doing. When I had 3/4 of me list completed and the garage wouldn't take anything more, I went inside for a spot of early lunch. Dragon came in to see why I wasn't back outside preparing. She told me about her holiday in Florida where she saw a coconut fly into a cement wall and break it during Hurricane Andrew. How the palm trees uprooted and smashed cars in the parking lot. I informed her we didn't have palm trees and coconuts, so I didn't think we had to worry about those coming through the windows. GEEZ!

As I was chewing on me sanny, I noticed me entire yard looked like I had moved. There was nothing out there, everything was GONE! I went to the front of me house and looked out, then to the sides and oh my God, nothing was out there but the motors!

Me mailbox was dug out and removed to God knows where and I knew this time the beavers didn't do it. We had, and HAD be the operative word here, an outdoor clock/temperature thingie that was screwed into the back porch post, well not anymore, GONE! The kiddo's sandbox which was filled with toys and sand, GONE and I have no clue where something that big could be stored. Cat door, BOARDED UP! YUP. Glass storms TAPED! I have since found out that most of our STUFF be residing in me old neighbour's barn. So when I get all me stuff back it will smell like cows. SIGH.

And now that all this be done, we have been downgraded to a tropical storm with 40 to 60 mph winds! So all this craziness may have been for nought. And if trees fall on the motors, Rabby told me we neighbour said we could borrow a horse or two. Oh yeah, I can see me now on a horse. Geez. So here I be all prepared for the worst which I doubt will happen, but I'd almost pray for a tree on the cars to see Dragon on a horse. BUT that ain't gonna happen because we all know the person who be most at home on a horse be Weasil AND he won't go out in the rain because it will mess his hair, so who does that leave? We know it's me, me, me!
