R. Linda:
With all the jobs New Hampshire has to offer, I have to ponder to meself why anyone would take a job where they stand outside all day in the heat, waving to passing traffic and basically not having to use their brains.
Standing on me feet for just two hours makes me want to sit down. Four hours of standing in the heat, on hot pavement, moving around as heated-up cars go passed just boggle the mind. But there are those who have no problem with this I assume, because I pass them by almost every weekday on my way to work.
There are days at work when I wish the day was over, or my brain feels like it's been on overload in the thought department and needs a rest. I stick it out because I have to or I lose me job. I often have work that I enjoy but sometimes an assignment comes that I just can't seem to get me teeth into, thus the brain overload and the need to take a nap and forget about it. But I wouldn't want to stand on a street corner to earn me bread, brain overload or not.
That aside, maybe a day on the hot pavement, in the heat watching the heat waves shimmy and shimmer up from the asphalt would be just what I need to appreciate my job more, even the assignments that I don't like. Yes, indeed R. Linda, I had all these thoughts as I stopped for a red light and watched the antics of two people across the way doing "their thing" to attract the attention of potential drivers who may or may not be in the market for a new mattress.
One stood there dancing around with a mattress strapped to his back and the other held a little sign telling the driver viewing public where to get a mattress. I sighed to meself that surely neither person gets paid much for their time on the street advertising. However, I did have to wonder if either were mattress salesmen who did not have much business and the manager sent them outside to drum up some business.
I had the fleeting thought to pull over, jump out, and ask both of them if it was worth it and are they paid for making fools out of themselves a salary worth the effort. I really wanted to know WHY. School is still in session and these two were there all week and weren't teenagers with no job experience. So WHY?
Me wise little apple-cheeked, grey-haired, with dimples, Mam did say that no matter they were at least doing an honest day's work unlike the so-called homeless man who dresses to the nines, looks like he just stepped out of a spa and begs money at the exit to the shopping mall. I told you about him, he does his thing and as soon as he's done, the 'look' of disability disappears and he runs off to his friend's car and they sit in the back seat counting the money.
Her opinion settled my curiosity. I hardly notice the dancing mattress or the sign holder anymore. It does though, jiggle my mind that 'they' still do that sort of advertising nowadays.
Just too hot for this |
