Fall Brings Patriot Football, Apple And Pumpkin Picking

 15 October 2021

Story #1040

R. Linda:

It be the season when all New England fans descend on Foxboro Stadium in Massachusetts to watch the Patriots in action. I have gone a couple of times to watch preseason training, and it is always packed like a real game.

This also signals apple season, which is a big deal in New Hampshire. There are orchards galore, and you can buy a bag and pick apples as you dream of apple pie, apple crisp, and most of all, apple cider doughnuts with real homemade apple cider!

Homemade deliciousness

We pick apples at Windy Hill Orchards in Greenville, New Hampshire. Going in early October and on weekends (especially the doughnut and cider stand) can be crowded.

If you go in late October, you will find most of the apples already picked, but fewer people around. It would be ideal to go apple picking on a weekday, but no doughnuts and cider if you do, that's reserved for weekends only.

A bag of luscious Cortlands

One year we ended up at Brookdale Farms in Hollis, N.H. which was not as rural a farm as Windy Hill, but the apples were plentiful, so if you are in the extreme southern part of the state Brookdale be a good place to pick apples AND they have a farm store chocked full of homemade and rare goodies. On our way to an orchard, we pass many a pumpkin patch. This one be filled every year.

Of course, Windy Hill also has pumpkins, and we always buy "Pumpkin Pete" there, after much walking around judging what gourd looks like a Pete!

I with me two little ones, carting off "Pumpkin Pete" and relatives

Of course, there will always be one kiddo who doesn't want to leave

One of our fav things to do at Windy Hill be the corn maze

The corn maze at Windy Hill be exciting for the wee ones and exhausting for the adults when the wee ones think they can lead the way out—it never happens. However, I love the rustle of the corn stalks, sounding like old bones, when it gets quiet inside the maze.

If there are any oldsters like me Mam, we take the hayride to the orchard.

There is a wagon pulled by horses at some places, but there is a John Deere tractor

Windy Hill has goats, chickens, calves, and pigs in a small farm zoo next to the pumpkin patch. The kiddos can feed the animals and have fun while the parents wait in line for hot doughnuts and cider.
